Carbomer (carbomer), also known as carbopol or carboxy-polymethleme, abbreviated as CP, is a high-molecular polymer formed by crosslinking acrylic acid with propylene sucrose or propylene pentaerythritol. With its CAS9003-01-4, Carbomer is an excellent new medicinal adjuvant, which is widely used in the research and production of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Carbomer is mainly used as a base for thickeners, suspending agents, adhesives, gels, and matrix materials for controlled and sustained-release preparations.
Carbomer powder
Carbomer is a white, loose, slightly odorous powder with strong hygroscopicity and an average water content of 8%. According to the different structures of polymer monomers, they can be divided into two categories: Carbomer 900 series and Carbomer 1300 series. CP products of different types and uses can be obtained by controlling the relative molecular weight and crosslinking degree of the polymer. CP900 series is obtained by crosslinking acrylic acid monomer with propylene sucrose or propylene pentaerythritol. Commonly used are carbomer 910, 934, 934P, 940, 941, 971P, 974P and other models, Among them, CP934P, CP971P, and CP974P can release drugs in zero-order or near-zero-order mode. They have extremely rapid and effective gelation characteristics. They also have good controlled and slow-release effects at very low concentrations, so they are often used as internal preparations. Use of excipients (P means that the product is pharmacopoeial grade). CP 1300 series are acrylic-alkyl methacrylate copolymers and propylene pentaerythritol cross-linked polymers, commonly used are carbomer 1342 and 1382 two types, they have good resistance to electrolytes.
Carbomer is soluble in water, glycerin and ethanol, and has the characteristics of colloidal solution. The commonly used concentration is 0.1% to 3%. Because its molecular structure contains 52% to 68% of acid groups, it has a certain acidity. The pH value of the 1% aqueous dispersion is 2.5 to 3.0, and the viscosity is low. When neutralized with alkali, the viscosity gradually increases as the macromolecules gradually dissolve, forming a clear solution at low concentrations, and forming at higher concentrations Translucent gel, the gel formed has the maximum viscosity and consistency at pH 6-12, and the viscosity drops when pH <3 or pH> 12. Commonly used neutralizing agents are triethanolamine, ethylenediamine, laurylamine, sodium bicarbonate, sodium hydroxide, etc. Generally, 1g of carbomer needs about 1.35g of triethanolamine or 400mg of sodium hydroxide to neutralize. Strong electrolytes and sunlight can reduce the viscosity of the gel. Temperature also has a certain effect on the viscosity, but the relative change is not large. The gel is best kept in a refrigerator protected from light.
Desheng carbomer has good gel, adhesion, thickening, emulsifying, suspending and film forming properties, and its chemical properties are stable and safe, without irritation and allergic reactions.
