The difference between Carbomer 900 series and 1300 series
An epidemic affected many things and pushed some things to the top. Carbomer was one of them. During the epidemic, you will hear the words "wash hands and wear masks" no matter where you go. Wearing masks has become the norm in life. The slogan "washing hands frequently" has led to the sale of no-clean disinfectant hand sanitizers, and manufacturers have to Increasing the production volume of hand sanitizer, and carbomer, which is the main component of card-free hand sanitizer, has become increasingly popular. There are mainly 900 series and 1300 series in Carbomer on the market. What is the difference between them?
1. The difference in nature
According to the different structures of polymer monomers, it can be divided into two categories: Carbomer 900 series and Carbomer 1300 series, the former is derived from the crosslinking of acrylic monomer (C3H4O2) with allyl sucrose or allyl pentaerythritol The latter is a cross-linked polymer of acrylic acid-alkyl methacrylate copolymer and allyl pentaerythritol.

By controlling the relative molecular mass and cross-linking degree of the polymer, products of different models and applications can be obtained. Commonly used carbomers are 910, 934, 934 P, 940, 941, 971 P, 974 P, and 1342 (the letter " "P" indicates that it can be used as an excipient for internal preparations), the United States Pharmacopeia (USP38) contains 6 kinds, namely carbomer 910, 934, 934 P, 940, 941, 1342.
The viscosity is shown in the table below:
model |
Carbomer concentration in aqueous solution |
Viscosity(mpa·s) |
Carbomer 910 |
1.0% |
3,000~7,000 |
Carbomer 934 |
0.5% |
30,500~39,400 |
Carbomer 940 |
0.5% |
40,000~60,000 |
Carbomer 934P |
0.5% |
29,400~39,400 |
Carbomer 941 |
0.5% |
4,000~11,000 |
Carbomer 1342 |
1.0% |
9,500~26,500 |
The 2015 edition of "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" divides carbomer into A, B, and C types, and its viscosity is shown in the table below:
model |
Carbomer concentration in aqueous solution |
Viscosity(mpa·s) |
Carbomer A |
0.5% |
4,000~11,000 |
Carbomer B |
0.5% |
25,000~45,000 |
Carbomer C |
0.5% |
40,000~60,000 |
It can be seen from the comparison of the viscosity of the above two tables:
CP2015 Carbomer A relative to Carbomer 941 in USP38;
CP2015 Carbomer B relative to Carbomer 934, 934P in USP38;
CP2015 Carbomer C is relative to Carbomer 940 in USP38.
Second, the difference between uses
Carbomer has a wide range of applications and can be used in external lotions, creams and gels. The carbomer gel system is an excellent gel matrix in a neutral environment. It is crystal clear and smooth to the touch. It is very suitable for preparing creams or gels. At the same time, due to the simple process and good stability, it feels comfortable after use. Therefore, it is widely used in local administration, especially in skin and ophthalmic gels.
1. Carbomer 941 has the characteristics of long rheology, low viscosity and high clearness, medium ion resistance and shear resistance, mainly used for external administration, suitable for external transdermal preparations and high transparency, low viscosity gel Emulsion stabilizer for gum, as well as daily washing and cosmetics.
2. Carbomer 934 is characterized by good thickening effect, permanent stability at high viscosity, and short flow in aqueous solution. Mainly used for local drug delivery system, suitable for high concentration gels, emulsions, suspensions.
3. Carbomer 934P is characterized by its permanent stability at high viscosity. Due to the trace amount of residual solvent, it is more suitable for oral preparations. Mainly used in oral, topical formulations, new drug delivery systems (such as controlled release matrix tablets), its advantages are: (1) linear drug release (zero-order release kinetics), (2) can increase bioavailability, (3) Low dosage supports slow release (4) cost savings, (5) increase the selectivity of the formulation, (6) can reduce tablet volume.
4. Carbomer 940 has the characteristics of short rheology, high viscosity and high definition. Mainly used in external preparations, suitable for the preparation of gels, creams, coupling agents.
5. Carbomer 1342 is characterized by an efficient thickening effect, can produce clear and transparent water or alcohol hydrocolloids, and has a strong anti-ion type. Mainly suitable for local drug delivery systems.
